Slips, trips and falls are the most common cause of major injuries in the workplace. They account for around a third of all reported major injuries. The majority of slip injuries can be contributed to wet or contaminated floors and trips to poor housekeeping.

Slips, Trips and Falls

  • Clean up spills or contamination from floors immediately. 

  • While the floor is wet cordon off the area. 

  • Use of safety signage until completely dry.

  • Provide entrance matting to reduce water egress into the building.

  • Treat external walk ways during Icy weather conditions

  • .Do not let fallen leaves build up.

  • Clean slippery floors with the appropriate cleaning chemical.

  • Maintain a high level of housekeeping.

  • Keep walkways clear and unobstructed.

  • Beware of trailing cables.

  • Prevent trips by maintenance of damaged and unsuitable floor surfaces.

  • Floor surface should have sufficient grip.

  • Ensure matting edges do not lift.

  • Staircases and walkways should be fully illuminated.

  • Beware of changes in level.

  • Provide a visual warning for changes in level.

  • Provide handrails where there are changes in level.

  • Ensure your vision is not impaired when carrying bulky or heavy items.

  • Beware of uneven ground.

  • Check ladders, step ladder are in a good state of repair before use.

  • Do not over reach when working at height.

  • Ensure appropriate footwear is worn.
